About Stanger Mill

Nestled in the rolling sugar fields of KwaDukuza, just a short drive north of Durban on the East Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the Sappi Stanger Mill stands as a unique beacon in South Africa’s industrial landscape. Strategically positioned next to the Gledhow Sugar Company, the mill utilises bagasse—a byproduct of sugar production—as its primary raw material to create office paper and tissue wadding. This innovative approach not only sets the mill apart but also highlights its commitment to sustainable practices.

Established in 1976 as a joint venture between Reed International and CG Smith, and becoming part of the Sappi family in 1979, Stanger Mill is the proud home of the iconic Typek brand. Renowned for its ultra-white, acid- and lignin-free copier paper, Typek is engineered to perform flawlessly across all office equipment, offering quality and reliability you can trust.

Cellulose derived from bagasse fibre is proving to be a transformative resource at the Stanger Mill with applications that highlight both innovation and sustainability. Valida L – a nanocellulose product which offers benefits like replacing synthetic compounds in industries like cosmetics, agriculture, and construction – is in the testing phase, and showcases the mill's commitment to research and development. In a promising joint venture with a U.S. partner, the Stanger Mill is utilising moulded fibre for sustainable products like biodegradable paper plates. This initiative not only supports waste reduction but also creates eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. Additionally, bagasse processing generates black liquor, from which the refined product Lignex BL25 is produced, effectively contributing to dust suppression. These advancements underscore Sappi’s innovative use of renewable resources to create meaningful environmental solutions.

More about the Stanger Mill

The pulp and paper manufacturing industry is constantly evolving to meet the ever-changing demands of end-users. At our Stanger Mill, international certifications guarantee adherence to world-class standards in quality, safety, health, and environmental best practices. These systems are rigorously audited every year to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

Additionally, the mill has earned Chain-of-Custody certification, underscoring our commitment to producing high-quality paper with a focus on environmental responsibility—delivering excellence without compromise.

Typek is a bright white office paper with superior smoothness which enhances print quality for crisp and clear images. Its excellent runnability reduces paper jams for trouble free printing and the low toner abrasion gives it a low dusting propensity. The paper’s high opacity results in less show through and good double-sided printing. Typek is acid and lignin free which provides archive properties.

Local manufacture of Typek creates and secures jobs. It is a paper that is made with care for the environment from a renewable resource and is recyclable and biodegradable. More businesses use Typek.

Produced and distributed in South Africa, our range of Triple Green Tissue papers is made from sugarcane waste fibre (bagasse) using an Elemental Chlorine-Free process. In addition to the bagasse, the virgin fibre component in the paper is Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™)-certified and is derived from sustainable tree plantations.

This sustainable approach ultimately also helps to protect our environment post-production, with paper that is biodegradable, acid-free and recyclable. Our Triple Green Tissue Industrial Wipe paper is used to make industrial, garage, medical and bathroom wipes. We also produce a selection of products for the home, office and hospitality industries – such as kitchen and hand towels, toilet paper and serviettes.

We’re dedicated to building a team of talented individuals who are passionate about achieving excellence and striving to be their very best.

As a forward-thinking and dynamic company, we’re constantly evolving and seeking out opportunities to grow. That’s why we’re looking for enthusiastic, driven individuals who thrive on challenges and are eager to make their mark in an exciting industry. In return, we offer comprehensive training, career development support, and a range of benefits.

Plus, you’ll enjoy working in the breathtaking setting of KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast—a region renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, stunning scenery, and ideal balance of work and play.
