About Stanger Mill

Nestled in the rolling sugar fields of KwaDukuza, just a short drive north of Durban on the East Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, the Sappi Stanger Mill stands as a unique beacon in South Africa’s industrial landscape. Strategically positioned next to the Gledhow Sugar Company, the mill utilises bagasse—a byproduct of sugar production—as its primary raw material to create office paper and tissue wadding. This innovative approach not only sets the mill apart but also highlights its commitment to sustainable practices.

Established in 1976 as a joint venture between Reed International and CG Smith, and becoming part of the Sappi family in 1979, Stanger Mill is the proud home of the iconic Typek brand. Renowned for its ultra-white, acid- and lignin-free copier paper, Typek is engineered to perform flawlessly across all office equipment, offering quality and reliability you can trust.

Cellulose derived from bagasse fibre is proving to be a transformative resource at the Stanger Mill with applications that highlight both innovation and sustainability. Valida L – a nanocellulose product which offers benefits like replacing synthetic compounds in industries like cosmetics, agriculture, and construction – is in the testing phase, and showcases the mill's commitment to research and development. In a promising joint venture with a U.S. partner, the Stanger Mill is utilising moulded fibre for sustainable products like biodegradable paper plates. This initiative not only supports waste reduction but also creates eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. Additionally, bagasse processing generates black liquor, from which the refined product Lignex BL25 is produced, effectively contributing to dust suppression. These advancements underscore Sappi’s innovative use of renewable resources to create meaningful environmental solutions.
