About Ehingen Mill
Nestled on the banks of the Danube in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, our Ehingen Mill makes both pulp and papers, and is famous as the world’s first chlorine-free bleaching plant.
Operating a 250m-long production line, the mill produces 150,000 tons of chlorine-free pulp, the majority of which is used in manufacturing a range of high-quality graphic and packaging papers. Around 280,000 tons of paper are produced each year – the equivalent of 1,500km of paper a day, and enough to stretch from Berlin to Rome.
Our Ehingen Mill plays an active part in the local community. In particular, we have formed strong educational partnerships with nearby schools and also support the technical university in Munich through internships, vocational experiences and apprenticeships.
The mill has introduced its own innovative practices alongside implementing Sappi’s corporate policy of sustainability and environmental protection. These include measures to increase the amount off biogenic fuels used in energy production as well as ways to reduce water consumption. Many of these improvements come as a result of ideas submitted by our people.
Our employees at Ehingen Mill are at the heart of our continuous innovation and optimisation. Data scientists, IT specialists, research and development experts, electrical engineers, paper technologists and many other specialists work hand-in-hand here. Together, we are able to tap into unrealised potential and implement new ideas that ensure Ehingen Mill continues to set enviable standards in sustainable paper production.

Join a culture built on innovation, sustainability and teamwork. Become part of our team and help shape the future!
Safety and health have top priority at our Ehingen Mill, which has developed its own occupational safety programme based on the slogan "Sappi.aber sicher" (“Sappi.be safe).
This programme is regularly revised and updated, and the commitment of employees to greater occupational safety is reflected in the low number of incidents.
In 2024 the mill reached 3 million hours without lost time injury, earning the first ‘Diamond Safety Award’ for Sappi Europe.
This major milestone reflects the dedication, vigilance and strong safety culture of each and every employee.
We are proud of our commitment and for setting new standards in workplace safety. Together, we continue to build a safer future!
Thanks to Ehingen’s state-of-the-art technology, the mill requires highly trained specialists across a number of disciplines, including paper technologists, engineers, mechanics and electricians, environmental technologists for wastewater management and industrial clerks.
Apprenticeships play a key role in bringing through the next generation of specialists. That’s why we take on 10 apprentices each year – and why the mill offers a dual-study programme leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree in paper technology and also a dual-study programme in business administration. Those who successfully complete their training are offered positions at the mill. We also offer students the opportunity of internships, working student jobs or vacation work. After studying electrical engineering, it is possible to start a 2-year trainee program with us in order to take your first steps in professional life with good training
Being a part of the community is important to us at Ehingen Mill – which is why the mill and its employees are keen supporters of regional associations and charitable events. The mill makes paper donations to schools and kindergartens, as well as hosting paper-making events. During the summer, two-day vacation programmes are run for local schoolchildren.
Ehingen Mill is also known for its popular mill tours, open to local residents and groups, where visitors learn how sustainable pulp and paper production works.
Caring for the environment
In line with Sappi’s ambitious sustainability goals, Ehingen Mill runs a range of important initiatives. These include employing wastewater to generate energy and using biogenic fuels to power the plant – all designed to look after the mill’s immediate environment while helping to promote a thriving world.
Powered by biogenic energy
Around 85% of the primary energy used to power Ehingen Mill comes from biogenic fuels made using organic matter left over from production processes: pulp liquor, biogas from wastewater treatment, plus bark and wood residues. The power plant is operated using the so-called co-generation process, which means that steam is used both for heat supply and for electricity generation.
Improving energy efficiency
In 2021, three Sappi Ehingen Mill employees had the idea of using a heat exchanger to recover otherwise-lost heat when cooling the digesters – and hit upon a way to make the plant more efficient and sustainable. Energy recovered in the new process resulted in energy savings of 16,000 MWh per year. At the same time, with less sulphur dioxide and hydrogen peroxide required, the load on the wastewater treatment plant is reduced.
Wastewater generates green energy
Wastewater is a byproduct of the paper-making process. At Ehingen Mill this water is treated so that it creates biogas, which is then fed into one of three methane reactors to generate energy. The residue water from this procedure is then purified so that it can be safely released into the Danube river.
Responsible Wood Sourcing
By sourcing woodfibre that originates from controlled, non-controversial sources in accordance with the PEFC and FSC™ standards and Sappi’s responsible sourcing requirements, we support forests and forest communities worldwide but also demonstrate our commitment to protecting biodiversity, preventing deforestation, and creating a forest-positive future.
